Mixed Year Group Curriculum Planning

A class in Phase 2 contains children from both Year 3 and Year 4. Mixed year group planning is the process teachers use to ensure that all pupils receive learning that is appropriate for their age, stage and needs, regardless of the year group they are in. Teachers carefully plan lessons so that key knowledge and skills are taught progressively over time, following the National Curriculum while avoiding unnecessary repetition.

Our mixed-age curriculum operates on a cyclical programme, typically over a two-year cycle. This means that all pupils will cover the full range of curriculum objectives and essential knowledge for their year group during their time in the class. Topics may be revisited in different contexts, allowing learning to be deepened and built upon, while ensuring that children do not miss any key content.

Learning objectives, activities and levels of challenge are carefully adapted to meet the expectations for each year group, enabling all pupils to make strong progress and be fully prepared for the next stage of their education. This approach also provides valuable opportunities for collaboration, independence and peer learning within a supportive classroom environment.
